This is possibly our most popular Northern Lights short break, providing probably the best opportunities for seeing the Aurora Borealis, together with the fabulous surroundings and activity options.
Abisko is one of the most northerly villages in Europe. Surrounded by mountains and bounded by Lake Torneträsk, the village is a fascinating insight into life inside the Arctic Circle.
Due to its location, inland and surrounded by mountains, the weather in the area around Abisko is exceptionally stable (reportedly the area experiences the least amount of precipitation of anywhere in Sweden, whilst just a few kilometres away is the highest levels).
Principally, clear skies! Because the weather tends to push around rather than over Abisko.
Combine that with tiny levels of light pollution and the chances of being in the right place at the right time for Aurora spotting is very high.
Fly to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland where a guide will meet and transfer you to Abisko Mountain Lodge, your base for the next 3 nights. After check in kit yourselves out with the complimentary arctic clothing we provide.
Mina and Dick Johansson, your hosts, run a really friendly and warming lodge, with a restaurant serving excellent meals using local ingredients.
This evening enjoy the fantastic cuisine at Mountain Lodge as you partake in their traditional Lappish menu which includes Reindeer, Arctic Char and Cloudberries – 3 of the unique ingredients to the area. The only thing that can interrupt your evening is the Aurora Call. Abisko Mountain Lodge is in a fantastic location for northern lights viewing so if they are out you may be tempted to step out the door and gaze skywards!
After Dinner venture out on a northern lights hunt. The adventure takes you to where the guides believe the best viewing location might be. This can include being pulled on a snowmobile sled to a couple of locations on the frozen Lake Tornetrask. The silhouette of Mt Noulja creates a stunning backdrop for northern lights photos. Take your cameras and the guides can help with basic settings plus there are a few tripods that can be used. Warm drinks and snacks are included.
