Gourmet Sami & Aurora Experience

Gourmet Sami Experience

December 15th 2016 - March 31st 2017

Sorbyn is picture postcard Lapland and the perfect base for a combination of traditional hospitality with best in class activities in pristine wilderness. Being in a remote location, nights are often blessed with Northern Lights.

A short distance away is one of the best 'micro kennels' in Lapland. Richard Karlsson has assembled what has to be the most beautiful set of Siberian Huskies we have seen. A day with Richard and a day with the Eriksson Sámi family at Flakaberg give authentic arctic experiences for the discerning traveller.

This is the perfect place for those wanting a real retreat with quality experiences, good chances of seeing the Aurora and wonderful food!

Day 2 - Daytime Husky Adventure with Lunch. Gourmet dinner

After breakfast enjoy one of the best husky experiences imaginable. Richard Karlsson provides an extremely high quality and personal dog sledding experience beyond the ordinary.

The differences are tangible:

  • Beautiful pure bred Siberian huskies, closely bonded to their Swedish family and carers
  • Only 2 persons per dog sled and only 2 sleds per tour
  • A small family business where the owner is the lead guide
  • Time to relax and get to know the huskies and learn about their life.
  • An ideal location with endless forests and lakes to explore.

This half day tour will give you the chance to both be driven and to mush your own sled dog team. Lunch is served at the end of the tour.

This afternoon you can relax, walk around the beautiful area or try your hand at one of the optional extra activities below.

Enjoy a delicious gourmet dinner at the lodge.

Day 3 - Sami Culture Day - Option of staying at Aurora Safari Camp

After breakfast you will be met at Sörbyn for a guided transfer to Flakaberg in the Råne River valley to visit the Eriksson forest Sámi family at Flakaberg. Lars Eriksson will show you the reindeer and talk about Sámi life, its past, present and future. This is truly authentic experience and you fell privileged to share time with Lars.

Visit his reindeer coral prior to a Snowmoblile transfer with sled to the beautiful Gorgin lake where a typical lunch is served in a wooden tepee around the campfire. Take a short walk in the surroundings together with Lars, an opportunity to get an inside look at an ancient culture.

This evening enjoy another fine dinner in the restaurant at your lodge or for the more intrepid how about a night of glamping Lapland style?

The Lodge Sorbyn

The Lodge in Sorbyn looks out over a frozen lake surrounded by pine forests. A small 7 bedroom lodge and a few lakeside cabins comprise this small hotel. The real gem is the restaurant.

Chef Rickard Karlsson has worked in many of Sweden's finest restaurants and serves up a fayre that acts as a magnet.

All rooms are en-suite and combine simple Nordic touches. They are themed to reflect the seasons found in Lapland.

The main building houses a restaurant, lounge area and bar. The fireplace creates an atmosphere in which you can unwind and feel at one with the scenery around you.

The Aurora Safari Camp, Sorbyn

The Aurora Camp is the brain child of Fredrik Browman and was inspired by the camps he has visited in Africa. This is glamping Arctic Style and in a beautiful corner of Swedish Lapland.

The 5 Sami Lavvu rooms and the Lavvu Lounge are set in pristine woodland overlooking a frozen river system. With log burners in each, they are snug but also simplistic. The toilet is a short walk away.

There is no carbon footprint as all energy is created by solar panels or biofuel and, what is more, Fredrik has taken the concept of working in partnership with the local community, learned in Africa, and applied this to his operation of the camp. The local community benefits from the development of tourism.

There is an open roaring fireplace where cooking is done and a dining Lavvu tent, which is beautifully attired and forms a central point for meals at night.

If you are looking for authenticity and back to nature simplicity then this is a must. There are a number of excellent activities available in the area including snow shoe walks, husky sled dog driving and snowmobiling. As part of a longer journey through Lapland this is adds greatly to the experience
