DAY 1- 30th December 2017 - Fly to Reykjavik & Drive to Reykjavik.

Fly from London Heathrow to Reykjavik, where on arrival you will pick up your hire car to drive to central Reykjavik. Evening at leisure. We would recommend you try one of the many excellent fish restaurants.

DAY 2- 31st December 2017 - Dinner at the Hofnin and Midnight Firework Cruise with Bubbly

Day at leisure to explore Reykjavik; There are plenty of museums and quirky shops to keep you interested, as well as the old town and harbour.

Tonight you will dine at 8.30pm in the delightful Hofnin restaurant in the old harbour with some tables having lovely views across the harbour. This family run restaurant is in a converted 1930’s fishing shed and focuses on classic Icelandic cuisine with a modern twist. Popular dishes are the shellfish soup which has become quite famous, the traditional fish stew, Char and the Icelandic lamb and beef. You will have a 4 course set menu (Beverages not included and payable locally).

Hofnin is perfectly located for your next New Years Eve adventure as the boat is moored right outside for your cruise to see Reykjavik´s World Legendary Fireworks Display and, if you are lucky, the Northern Lights too!

The boat will leave the harbour at 11pm and returns approximately half an hour after midnight. The view from the sea gives you the chance of seeing ALL the fireworks over the city.

You will receive a complimentary glass of Bubbly as midnight approaches and, as the clock hits 12, raise a toast to the New Year.

Find a spot in the cozy indoor saloon or on the open-air deck wearing the warm overalls provided. Then, enjoy the views over the glittering lights of Iceland's capital as your boat cruises out into Faxaflói Bay. There is a pay bar on board as well.

Keep checking for Northern Lights as well as it is not just the fireworks that you are hoping to see!

Overnight in Reykjavik

DAY 3- 1st January 2018 - Explore Iceland's South Coast or Golden Circle & Self drive to Hotel Ranga

This morning head off in your self drive car to the South coast with the dramatic Glaciers and Volcanoes of Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull to your left and the Atlantic Ocean on your right.

Continue to the charming small village of Vik to visit the Black Beaches and dramatic rock formations

Visit Seljalandsfoss where you will be mesmerised as you walk behind and stare out through the falling water across the flat landscape towards the South Beaches. Also visit the dramatic and thundering Skogar Waterfall!

We would also recommend a stop at Eyjafjallajokull Visitor Centre which has a 20 minute film depicting the personal experience of a farmer during the 2010 eruption.

OR Golden Circle

Today explore the Golden Circle at your own pace using your own car. The day is packed full of surprising landscapes and geological marvels.

You will walk in a dramatic mini rift valley created by Tectonic plate movement, gaze at the thundering Gullfoss waterfall which can totally freeze in winter, and marvel at the Strokkur Geyser which erupts every 5 mins.

We would also recommend you visit the spot where the first democratic parliament was established in 930 AD overlooking the stunning plains of Pingvellir.

Continue to Hotel Ranga to overnight.

Hotel Ranga is famous as one of the best places in Iceland to see the world famous Northern Lights due to its location in an area where clear skies are more usual than elsewhere. As the hotel lies in a secluded, countryside setting without external lighting the hotel provides an excellent base for viewing the Aurora without light interference.

It offers a wake up call if the Aurora Borealis show whilst you are asleep.

We recommend sitting in one of the outdoor hot tubs with a drink in hand soaking up the atmosphere and with luck have the skies lit up by flashes of green light.

Alternatively Hotel Ranga has built their own first observatory a short stroll from the hotel in order to minimize light pollution, and they have an expert in there most cloud-free nights with two high quality 11 inch computerized telescopes. The expert can teach you about the stars and the northern lights if they are out. View amazing detail on Jupiter, see the rings of Saturn, and details on Mars. During the day you can observe the Sun, including sunspots in great detail and activity such as prominences and filaments. Overnight at Hotel Ranga.

DAY 4- 2nd January 2018 - Choice of 2 Guided SuperJeep Tours

After breakfast you have a choice of 2 SuperJeep adventures!

We work only with local guides who have lived their whole life in this area, belong to the Mountain Rescue Team and all have fascinating stories to tell of their experiences during the 2010 volcano eruption!

We always have fabulous feedback on how much our clients enjoy the personalised, relaxed guided experience.

Your off road Super jeep takes up to 10 people, in sharp contrast to the coach tours offered by other companies, who also cannot access many of the areas we take you to. This is serious off-roading !

Choose Between EITHER: Eyjafjallajökull's volcano Tour

This tour will take you as close as is possible to the new large crater in Eyjafjallajökull volcano from the 2010 eruption and to places where no hire car can go.

In your specially adapted Superjeep you will also be taken to see the Modi and Magni craters from the Fimmvordouhals eruption. The Super-Jeep will take you over the Glaciers on the top up a long way, and then there is about an hour’s walk from the end of the SuperJeep Trail to the Volcano where you can explore the volcano with its breath-taking views over the Þórsmörk valley and back across to the Atlantic Ocean. This is real adventure.

OR: Porsmork valley Tour

Your guide will take you up between the three glaciers; Myrdalsjokull, Eyjafjallojokull and Tindfjallojokull. In your specially adapted SuperJeeps you will have the thrilling drive of fjording glacial rivers and driving across the flood plain to see the lasting effects and landscape changes following Eyjafjallajökull's 2010 eruption.

You will be surrounded by an imposing mountain ridge and see spectacular landscapes. Stop at the stunning Seljalandsfoss waterfall , which you can walk behind and be mesmerised looking back through the falling water. If you wanted to see the “Raw Iceland” this is hard to beat!

Overnight at Hotel Ranga.

DAY 5- 3rd January 2018 - Drive to Blue Lagoon and onwards to airport for flight home.

This morning drive yourselves to the Blue Lagoon, Iceland's leading attraction to experience this geothermal wonder. Bathe in the warm bright blue waters which are particularly good for your skin, put Silica mud on your face or try out the Sauna and Steam rooms which are carved into the lava.

You can easily while away a couple of hours away and there is also a choice of restaurants with lovely views of the lagoon. We would also recommend the in-water massage treatments which are just heaven!

Onwards drive (20 minutes) to the airport for your flight home.

Its gourmet restaurant has an excellent reputation offering typical Icelandic dishes, as well as a few unusual surprises. We would highly recommend you take a drink and sit in the outdoor hot tubs and watch the skies for the Northern Lights. A splendid way to pass the time.

Options and upgrades

Northern Lights by Boat - 30th Dec

Hunting the Northern Lights from the ocean is an amazing experience. Sail away from the coastline of Reykjavik and see the Aurora Borealis out on the North Atlantic ocean with beautiful mountains and the city lights in the background.

This 2-3 hour Northern Lights cruise includes warm overalls to wear, heated seating areas inside, expert guide on board to explain the Northern Lights.

Price per person: From £88 per person

Northern Lights with Bonfire - 1st Jan

Tonight you will be picked up for a 3 hour adventure to hunt out the Northern Lights with one of the local mountain guides.

In a specially adapted 4WD super jeep you will be taken inland off-road to the back of the famed Mount Helka to try and see if you can find the Northern Lights. This volcanic area is near Tindfjallajökul Glacier whose cooling effect creates clear skies critical for spotting the Northern Lights. This area also has very few artificial lights to spoil your viewing as many of the farms in the area were abandoned due to a previous volcanic eruption.

The beauty of this tour is that the guide will take you to the best area based on the forecast to see the Northern Lights and so give you the best chance of seeing them.

Assuming you have not diverted to a different area to see the Aurora you will stop for a warm up by a bonfire and a hot drink in a cave whilst your guide tells you about both the Northern Lights Phenomenon and some of the folklore that surrounds them and local superstitions! Sometimes you are taken to the Black Volcanic Beaches where the Atlantic Crashes onto the Black Sands. The guide will take you to the best location for you to see the Northern Lights depending on the forecast.

Price per person: From £110

Northern Lights Hunt - 30th Dec

This evening you will be taken out from Reykjavik in a Super-jeep into the wilderness for a final search of the Northern Lights. Given cloudless skies sightings can occur from autumn to early spring. The elders say that the colder the nights the more vibrant & intense the colors will be. Swirling and swaying overhead, displays are usually greenish yellow but white, red and pink lights also frequently appear.

Price Per Person: From £145
