A fabulous Northern Lights New Year short break, with experiences including Dog Sledding, visit to the Aurora Sky Station and an evening with our 'tame' photographer Chad Blakely or one of his equally experienced colleagues for an Aurora Photo Experience.
Departing on the 28th December 2016, fly via Stockholm to Kiruna where your transfer to Abisko will be waiting - enjoy fabulous scenery as you head further inside the Arctic Circle.
On arrival at Abisko, you'll check into the Abisko Mountain Lodge and then the real experience will commence!
Fly to Kiruna via Stockholm in Swedish Lapland where you will be met and transferred to Abisko, about 1 hour's travel time. On check-in you will be kitted out with complimentary arctic clothing, yours to use for the duration of your break.
This evening the renowned Abisko Mountain Lodge Chefs will introduce you to the local cuisine.
Abisko Mountain Lodge is in a fantastic location for northern lights viewing so if they are visible you may be tempted to step out the door and gaze skywards! There is also the opportunity to wander out for a night walk in one of the best locations on earth for aurora watching.

After breakfast venture out for a 2 hour Alaskan Trapper Husky experience. This half day activity allows you to experience the sensation of being pulled through the snow by your enthusiastic sled dogs. Admire the beautiful landscapes within Abisko National Park whilst your guide does all the work!
Return for lunch and then at leisure.
This evening enjoy the fine menu at Abisko Mountain Lodge prior to joining the “Lights Over Lapland” team for their exclusive northern lights photo tour designed for weekend a la carte guests staying at Abisko Mountain Lodge. This gives you fantastic opportunities to see and photograph the aurora borealis in the wilderness of Abisko National Park.
Walk right out the lodge front door and a snowmobile transfer will take you to our exclusive location with commanding views over the mountains and the lake, both of which provide wonderful backdrops for aurora photos! You will have 2 guides, one to instruct you and the other to look after you and make drinks etc. We have a yurt set up with a fire so you can warm up if necessary.
You will be supplied with cameras preset for Aurora photography and spend the evening in Abisko National Park. Whether you are a Pro or never taken a picture in your life you have a great chance of going home after your northern lights holiday with some beautiful aurora photographs and memories that will last a lifetime!

Breakfast in the lodge prior to your introduction to the Sami lifestyle through a visit to Hakan Enoksson's Corral.
You will be taken on a magnificent short drive (45 mins) along Lake Tornetrask to Rensjon and to the Sami village where your host Hakan Enoksson provides a warm welcome in a Sami Lavu(tepee). Sit around the roaring fire and hear stories about the lifestyle of a reindeer herding family. Break to visit the Corral to feed the reindeer prior to enjoying traditional drinks & lunch.
This evening the chefs at Abisko Mountain Lodge will prepare an authentic Lappish new year dinner combining some of the traditional ingredients like Reindeer, Arctic Char and Cloudberries.
As midnight approaches top up your glasses and venture outside to toast the New Year. With any luck your northern lights holiday will be complete with the Aurora blazing above you.

After breakfast venture out into the wilds of Abisko National Park on a snowmobile adventure.
Peter your Snowmobile guide, will meet you at the lodge and take you out for a 2 hour exploration of Abisko National Park. As Abisko National Park surrounds Abisko Mountain Lodge you don't have to go far to get some awe inspiring views of the frozen Lake Tornetrask and the unique glacial formation of Laporten, which rises like a beacon out of the white desert!
There are fewer more picturesque places to snowmobile in Swedish Lapland. Lunch is included back at the lodge
Return to the lodge for some downtime before dinner.
This evening after dinner in the lodge, transfer to Abisko Sky Station, widely regarded as the best place in the world to see the Northern Lights. Take the chairlift up Mount Nuolja to the observatory which offers visitors a panoramic view over Lapporten, the Abisko Alps and Tornetrask.From this advantageous position with commanding views looking north across Lake Tornetrask, the northern lights always seem more dramatic.

After breakfast at leisure until departure for Jukkasjarvi, home to the original ICEHOTEL. Now in its 27th edition (as it is built from scratch every year) it gets more impressive each year. This incredible structure is built afresh each year and is a must see for anyone visiting Kiruna. Its Art suites are works of art and additionally there is the icebar, chapel and the excellent shop to visit.
You will also see the revolutionary design and function of ICEHOTEL 365, the new permanent edition of the ICEHOTEL.
The driver will then take you on to the airport in time for your flight home at the end of your action packed New Year northern lights holiday to Abisko

Abisko Mountain Lodge
Based in the Northern Lights capital of Europe and run by a wonderful and entertaining couple, Abisko Mountain Lodge is a secluded base for some very special experiences.
The lodge is a single low, red house that lies hidden away at the foot of the mighty mountains. Meet in the lounge where guests can relax, watch skiing films or play games. The restaurant serves delicious meals and there is a relaxing sauna.
Dick is one of the most qualified mountain guides in Sweden while Mina is described as a Skier and ray of sunshine who lights up the hotel. There is a helicopter landing pad behind the hotel for some of the best Heli skiing in Europe.
